Share/Save/Bookmark DTV 2009: Digital Television Began June 12, 2009
What you need to know about the switch
Updated July 2, 2009 DTV is coming. Are you ready?

As of midnight on June 12, 2009, all full power broadcast television stations including the major networks started transmitting in digital signals. Many stations started earlier.

Anyone who receives television signals over the airwaves with an antenna (roof mounted or those attached directly to the TV) will need a special converter box to continue using their older, non-digital TVs. Anyone who subscribes to cable or satellite TV or who has a digital-ready set will not need this converter box.

To help defray the cost of the converter boxes, the federal government has coupons available. Each household may receive up to two $40 coupons to apply toward the purchase of converter boxes.

To get the coupons, you'll need to do any of the following:

  1. Apply online at https://www.dtv2009.gov
  2. Call 24-hours 888-388-2009 / 866-495-1161 Spanish / 877-530-2634 TDD
  3. Download an application, fill it out and mail it to: PO BOX 2000, Portland, OR 97208-2000
  4. Download an application, fill it out and fax it to 877-388-4632
If you are having technical or reception problems due to the DTV conversion, call the FCC at 888-CALL-FCC or 888-225-5322.
