2-1-1 Arizona - A Service of Community Information and Referral Services

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) is a program that provides free tax preparation to benefit individuals with low to moderate income, senior citizens, Non-English speaking persons, and individuals with disabilities. Volunteers prepare basic tax returns at conveniently located community and neighborhood locations. Returns are filed electronically resulting in fast refunds. All training and materials are provided free from the IRS.

Local VITA Impact

In Arizona, millions of EITC dollars go uncollected by eligible families. In one hour, you can help a moderate or low-income family collect hundreds, even thousands, of dollars to meet basic needs, purchase a house, or buy a car through your local Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program!

Volunteers play a crucial role in EITC campaigns. Free tax preparation sites depend on volunters and not only do they help working families get the credit(s) they deserve, but also save families the fee charged by professional tax preparers. Volunteers help return millions of dollars every year. That helps thousands of hard working families help themselves.

Tax Preparer
Assists taxpayers with their tax returns during the tax season. Bilingual (English/Spanish) tax preparers are always in high demand.

Screener
Responsible for assisting clients with intake forms and ensuring taxpayers have the correct tax documents and identification. This is a critical role as it is the initial point at which important tax return information is gathered and verified.

Greeter
Welcomes tax filers to the VITA site and may also inform taxpayers about other available community resources.

Interpreter
Aids taxpayers by working alongside tax clients and preparers. Spanish speaking volunteers are always needed.

Volunteer Commitment

Volunteers are asked to commit a minimum of 25 hours during the upcoming tax season.

Volunteer Training

All volunteer tax preparers must be IRS Certified. Certification courses are held every November through January at various times and locations. Courses are typically 20-24 hours total with the certification test taken online during the last class. Volunteers receive a tax certificate upon successful completion of training. That certificate must be presented to the site coordinator. A self-paced online training program called Link & Learn is available from the IRS.
